University Marshal and Opera Director Nancy Hermiston, English Professor Sherrill Grace, and Forest Sciences Professor Emeritus James Kimmins are among members of the UBC community who have been appointed to the Order of Canada, one of the country’s highest civilian honours.
Joining the three professors in the list of new appointees are three UBC alumni and two honorary degree recipients. Governor General David Johnston announced 90 new appointees on Dec. 30, 2013.
BACKGROUND
Sherrill Grace
Sherrill Grace has been appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada for promoting Canadian culture and identity through her collection of published works. Grace is a professor in the Department of English and a University Killam Professor and has published more than 200 papers, 19 books, and co-edited plays about Canadian art, theatre, film, music and literature. She is a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and a recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal.
Nancy Hermiston is an accomplished opera singer who has performed throughout Canada, the United States and Europe. She joined UBC’s School of Music in 1995 and established the UBC Opera Ensemble, which now tours in Europe, China and Canada. Hermiston is chair of the School of Music’s Voice and Opera Divisions and also serves as University Marshal. She has been appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada for her achievements as an opera singer, stage director and educator.
Forest ecologist and professor emeritus James Kimmins has been appointed a Member of the Order of Canada for his contributions to the field of ecology and for promoting environmental sustainability in forest management.
Alumnus and surgeon Mortan Doran (’73) was recognized for his efforts to raise awareness of Tourette Syndrome and for his commitment to medical education. Conservationist Juri Peepre (’81) was appointed for his role in protecting the Canadian wilderness.
UBC honorary degree recipients Michael Bliss (’07) and Douglas Coupland (’10) were named Members of the Order of Canada. Coupland’s archives are housed in the UBC Library. Vancouver philanthropist Djavad Mowafaghian, who has made significant contributions to the University, was also named a Member of the Order of Canada for his generosity in support of the health, education and well-being of children.
